The Windrush generation were invited to live and work in the UK many came to hope that the streets here were ‘paved with gold’. Many arrived and lived in the Black Country and they also brought with them a strong conviction in the Christian Gospel. However many either found they were not so welcome amongst the traditional church because of either cultural or theological differences and so decided to set up on their own churches. ‘Black Church’ photos were taken at a New Testament Church of God of Prophecy in Willenhall in the Black Country in 1995. Strobe lighting on camera utilised with slow flash synchronisation was used to create movement to show a faith that is founded in the Pentecostal/Charismatic tradition where musical worship and experience of God during the service is tantamount to belief .
